Once a fashionable seaside resort for New Yorkers, later a sleazy, fading shore town, now on its way back up. Made famous by Bruce Springsteen.

  • Going to go into depression when Fort Monmouth finally closes in 2011. This is unfortunate, but the so called leadership and community leaders will screw it up out of pure greed and stupidity. Take a look at the old CERDEC building behind Charles Wood's area. 15 years and still not re-developed. Long Branch will also see depression again post BRAC. Too bad.
  • One of the many towns that has more then it's share of hard years. Asbury Park is going through a rework as new condos and such are built. The sad part is that the township does nto care about the businesses and people who love their town and have stayed their through thick and thin. Famouse as well as great places for art and music are scheduled to be taken by the city through the city calling the area "Blighted" The Stone Poney The Barronett The Fast Lanes Asbury Lanes To name a few. It is just heart breaking to think of how these places and the people who run then have done business over the years and are rewarded with being kicked out for the city to give the land to a private orginization to build condos on and for that orginization to sell. Now mind you there was a nice amount of empty or deserted property up by the area these places are. Takeing empty land that has been defalted back to the town over the years or land with abandoned buildings on it and turning that land into condos etc is perfectly fine. But kicking out and destroying places like the ones listed above is a crime. Not only a crime to the owners but the arts and music scene in the surrounding area.
  • Don't forget one of the latest... The Wonderbar on 5th right across from the old Howard Johnson's on the boardwalk. Another piece of Asburyana snuffed out.
  • Asbury Park was "made famous" long before Springsteen was even born. Cole Porter mentioned it in his 1937 song "At Long Last Love" and of course every newspaper reader in America knew about it in 1934 after the Morro Castle beached itself in front of Convention Hall.
  • That's right--Asbury Park was famous and well known for many years, reaching its zenith during the World War II years. My family has owned property (a hotel that burned down and now an apartment house) in Asbury since 1958. There was a time in the 50s and 60s that one could not find a parking place within a half mile of the boardwalk, when the boardwalk, itself was filled with people, when dozens of hotels (most of which have burned down) filled the streets and catered to families from New York and North Jersey. Asbury Park was literally designed to be a playground with wide streets and several parks as well as six theaters (of which all but the Paramount have been torn down.) The Paramount, Lyric, St. James and Mayfair theaters were glorious in their splendor, matching the Broadway theaters in New York. Convention Hall, The Casino and the Palace Amusements were structures that catered to the enjoyment of all. Sadly, the town has been mismanaged since the early 1970s. It is now being rescued by a real estate developer erecting $1.5 billion in condominiums.
