Sangdaepo

Sangdaepo was an international port that provided links to China and Japan. From ancient times, it was an important maritime transportation center. It is said that Dr. Wangin and his entourage of Baekje used this port when they left for Japan.

This port is located in Gurim village, a traditional village with a long history dating from the Samhan Period. Gurim Daedonggye, a mutual assistance and cooperation system, still operates and it has existed for 440 years. The village was the native home of State Preceptor Doseon who lived during the late Silla period and Choe Ji Mong of the early Goryeo period.

In addition, it has the Gurim-ri porcelain site. That site became the foundation for the crafting of world-famous Goryeo Celadon and Joseon White Porcelain wares. The excavation of Gurim porcelains in other areas, the areas surrounding Sandaepo, have proven the port had an active international exchanges with China and other southern areas.

Sangdaepo was an impotant international port that brought both the culture of the sea and other continental cultures to the Korean Peninsula.
