The North Meadows has become a center for business and industry, with large parcels of land, and convenient access to Interstate 91 and downtown Hartford. The Meadows Music Theatre (now known as the New England Dodge Music Center) is located here as is the Connecticut Expo Center.

The North Meadows Landfill has served Hartford residents since 1940 as a site where residential refuse was dumped, openly burned and/or incinerated. In 1982 the city leased the land to the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority, and since 1988 the landfill has been used not for raw garbage – as had been the case in its past – but to receive ash from the CRRA Mid-Connecticut Project trash-to-energy plant as well as non-processible material and assorted bulky and special wastes. As of December 31, 2008 the landfill was closed and a long-term environmental control system has been put into place.

Riverside Park offers a playground, picnic facilities, nature trails, access to fishing in the Connecticut River, public art, a public boat launch and two-story Victorian-style boathouse. It is the northern terminus of the Riverside Walk and home to the Riverside Cricket Club.
