Here Mark Twain's father, John Marshall Clemens, carried out his duties as Justice of the Peace. Warner Brothers Studios purchased the building in the early 1940s, donating it to the City of Hannibal in gratitude for the city's assistance with a Tom Sawyer film adaptation. The building was moved to its present site in 1956 from its original location on the 100 block of Bird Street.
