This pilastered Greek Revival building was assembled prior to 1840 from sections shipped by steamboat from Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Orville Grant ran a drug store on the lower floor and resided upstairs with his wife. As a boy, Samuel Clemens (later known as Mark Twain) roomed here with his family after financial troubles drove them from their home across Hill Street. The family stayed with the Grants from 1846-1847, during which time Samuel's father died here of pneumonia. Today the building features a recreation of Grant's store as it might have appeared during the Clemenses' stay.
