building, museum, theatre
In 1984, the Carmelite nuns had moved into this brick building, which was formerly used as a theater for prisoners. When the Auschwitz camp was in operation, this building was the place where the Nazis stored cans of Zyklon-B, the gas that was used to disinfect the clothing and to murder the prisoners in the gas chambers. The place where the controversial Cross was erected in 1988 lies just to the east of this building. The nuns were forced to move out, after protests by American Jews, and they now live in a new convent that was built for them nearby.
