tree, place with historical importance, natural monument
Ivan Shishkin, a Russian painter, sometimes spent his vacations in Narva-Jõesuu and Udria, where he loved to sit under a tree and paint. Shishkin has painted this tree several times; the paintings are included in the main exposition of the Russian Museum in St Petersburg.
In folk culture, this tree is called the Kissing Pinetree. Legend says that lovers who kiss under the tree, will stay together forever.
Superstitious people, who are going to get married, tie colourful ribbons in the branches, believing that this will make their life together better. Therefore, wedding parties often stop there so that the groom could climb the tree and tie a ribbon to a branch. A bottle of sparkling wine is also drunk and once it is empty, it is broken on the spot.
