Seiryuzan Zuigan-ji Temple (Matsushima Town)

Japan / Miyagi / Shichigahama / Matsushima Town / Matsushima Aza Chonai, 91
place with historical importance, buddhist temple, historical building

Typically referred to as 'Zuigan-ji'.

Zuiganji suffered only minor damage from the earthquake's tremors, served as an evacuation area during the tsunami and was reopened to tourists in April 2011.

A very fine example of a northern Japanese Zen Buddhist Temple, built in Irimoya-zukuri style (namely, flat and round roof tiles are alternated). Built in 828. It took five years to construct the present buildings for Date Masamune, who reigned over this district in 17th century. Among them, the main hall and other premises are designated as national treasures.

Here you can find Sanskrit alongside Japanese inscriptions.
