Erected in 1930 [or 1940] by "his Kealia Japanese friends," in memory of Colonel Zephaniah Swift Spalding (1837-1907), who owned and managed the Makee Sugar Company and plantation in this area which was founded by his father-in-law, Captain James Makee (1812-1879).
