34th ASW Missile Boat Squadron (Haifa)

Israel / Haifa / Haifa
 boat, squadron (naval)

In the late 1960s, Israel Shipyards was the first in the Western world to design and build a fast-attack missile boat: the Reshef Class SAAR 4, commissioned by the Israeli Navy. At that time, it was a new concept to use relatively small, fast missile-equipped craft to meet threats in the Naval arena. The Saar 4 or Reshef class missile boats were built at the Israel Shipyards and based on Israeli Navy designs grounded in accumulated experience derived in the operation of "Cherbourg" (Saar 3) class. Saar 4 ships first battle engagements were made in the October 1973 Yom Kippur War. During this war, two Saar 4 ships engaged in missile battles with Egyptian and Syrian ships and coastal targets.

The two remaining vessels of this sub-calss in the Israeli Navy have now been converted and equipped to serve in a specific anti-submarine warfare role.
