Canada / Ontario / Kingston /
museum, park, place with historical importance, fortification, UNESCO World Heritage Site

This small defensive limestone fort, called a Martello Tower, was built in 1846 to provide a western defensive site for Kingston. The site is part of the Kingston Fortifications National Historic Site of Canada which, along with Fort Henry and the Rideau Canal, has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Murney Tower is the only one of the three Kingston-area Martello towers administered by Parks Canada that is open to the public. The tower has been operated as a museum by the Kingston Historical Society since 1925 under a lease agreement with Parks Canada. It is open to the public from mid-May until Labour Day.
