office building, 1887_construction, haunted house / building, 1880s construction
The three-storey, wood-frame, post-Gold Rush, Second Empire style house at 1124 Fort Street, is valued as the most impressive surviving example of the mansard-roof residence in Victoria.
Built: 1887
Dr. Thomas J. Jones, a dental surgeon from Ontario, chose to build this home in 1887 at the foot of the hill rising to Rockland, now dominated by Craigdarroch Castle, symbolizing the transition between town & country. He quickly developed the biggest dental practice in the city and was eventually elected first president of the BC Dental Association.
