Freedom Square in Kliptown, Soweto. Historic place where on 26 June 1955 the Congress of the people, consisting of people of all races opposed to the white-supremcist government of South Africa, adopted the Freedom Charter. The Freedom Charter calls for democracy and human rights, equality of race and language, land reform, labour rights, and nationalization. It is characterized by its opening demand: "The People Shall Govern!".
