Naju is very spread out, covering an area of more than 600 square kilometers, famous for its pears and lush farmland.
For centuries, Naju was the capital of the South Jeolla area, known then as Geumseong, It continued to be an important power base as control of the area passed from the Baekje Kingdom to the Koryo Kingdom and finally to the Joseon Kingdom. In 1895 the capital of the Province was moved to Gwangju.
Naju proper consists of the old Joseon-era center of town and several historical sites. North of the city center is Dae-ho Dong which is the location of Dongshin University, one of Naju's two universities.
