Former headquarters of the Sheffield Co-operative Society, and department store belonging to above. In 2005, SCS were bought by United Co-operatives Ltd, and any loss making ventures were abandoned. Castle house department store was one such sell-off. United Co-operatives was to be later taken over by the Co-operative Group Ltd, to form the worlds biggest consumer Co-operative. SCS's "out of town" base at Halfway was retained as a regional office.
