Site of the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam, currently under construction. When completed it will be one of the largest hydrolectric projects in the world.

In the rainy season, the dam at this location will divert most of the the water eastwards through an artificial channel to a new reservoir to the northeast. The turbines and generators will be located further to the north, on the shore of the Xingu river, near the current ferry of the Transamazonica highway. The water will thus bypass a good section of the Great Bend of the Xingu. Only a small fraction of the water (equivalent to the dry season flow) will be allowed to flow past this dam, in order to maintain minimum levels on that part of the Great Bend.
