Seat of government for Renfrew County, the largest county in Ontario in terms of square kilometres of area, although it is so sparsely inhabited that the total population is only around 52,000 including everyone who lives in the local municipalities. Note that the City of Pembroke is a separate entity and not a part of Renfrew County.
