An Ardtamhnac ‘the high field’

Ardtanagh was one of the eight townlands of Tullyomey, in the wider Magennis district of Kilwarlin. From evidence like Ballynehardtawny in Tullyomey c.1612, the name was clearly Baile na hArdtamhnaí ‘townland of the high field’. Tamhnach is also found in close compounds with Fionn- ‘white’ and Sean- ‘old’(Fintona Fionntamhnach, Seantamhnach). Ardtanagh Hill is a low isolated hill (named the Pine Hill, 630 feet, on the LGD map) between the Lagan, which forms the northern border of the townland, and a tributary. The western end of the hill is in the Dromore townland of Kinallen and is probably the feature referred to in that name (Cionn Álainn ‘the beautiful headland’).
