This place was discovered in 1989 by Syrian investigative journalist Nizar Nayouf (awarded the 2000 UNESCO prize). According to Mr. Nayouf's investigation, more than one thousand political prisoners (Syrian, Lebanese, Palestinian and Jordanian)had been subjected to tests of new bio-and-chemical weapons.
