The three municipalities(Makrakomi, Agios Georgios and Spercheiada) of Fthiotis prefecture were united and created a new one under the name Makrakomi and seat the town of Spercheiada. Now Makrakomi is a municipal unity of the new municipality.
Makrakomi is a town very famous for its carnival celebrations. Is situated about 31 kilometers west of Lamia near the Spercheus river, at an altitude of about 250 meters. The reported number of inhabitants was 2,374 inhabitants ( 1981 , 2,717( 1991 ), today the population is approximately 3,200 residents .
The name Makrakomi means long town and there was an ancient town here with the same name.
