Ir. An Baile Súgach

A townland in County Down, Northern Ireland. The name of the townland of Ballysugagh is recorded as Meryton als B’sonagh in 1549 (Ex. Inq. $3 Ed. VI), as Meritowne or Ballysonagh in 1603 (CPR Jas I 14a) and as Merrytowne in 1662 (Inq. Ult. $22 Car. II) and it is likely that the final element of the place-name is the English surname Merry (see Reaney 1958, 220) which was no doubt brought here by the Anglo-Normans. It was gaelicised as An Baile Súgach, i.e. ‘the merry townland’,from the mistaken idea that the initial element was the adjective ‘merry’!
