Binhai New Area (Chinese: 滨海新区) is a major economic development zone within the jurisdiction of Tianjin municipality in China. It was formed in 2007 by amalgamating the counties of Tanggu, Hangu and Dagang, plus some sections of Dongli and Jinnan counties. It is a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the PRC, with sub-provincial status, and it is intended to be the North China equivalent to Pudong in Shanghai and Shenzhen in Guangdong. Experimental reforms and immense development projects are ongoing, including expanding the Port of Tianjin (already the fifth largest in the world by cargo throughput) and enormous land reclamation projects in the coastal salt marshes and muddy littoral, intended to become clusters of heavy industry, plus wide developmental areas planned to attract high-tech industries and other high value-added enterprises.
