Chalk Bay is the downstream termination of the Maskinonge Fault which contains the string of lakes including Balmer Bay, Little Rat Lake, Big Rat Lake, Maskinonge Lake, Sturgeon Lake and Chalk Bay which constitute the ancient course of the Ottawa River during the end of the last glaciation era, about 7,000 BCE.
