The Deer Isle Thorofare is a major shipping chanell connecting Penobscot Bay to the the waters aroun Mount Desert Island and the open Atlantic ocean to the east. It is well marked for major vessels with several lighthouses and numerous navigation buoys. It is often considered the safer passage than through the numerous small islands south of Crotch Island.
