The castle of fortress of Usvyaty was built on the orders of Ivan IV in 1567. In 1580 the Polish king Stefan Bathory conquered the fortress and it became part of Poland-Lithuania. After being briefly recovered by the Russians in 1664-1667, it was annexed by Russia permanently in 1772.
