Ir. Lios Dealgan ‘Dealga’s ringfort’
Discussion
Lisdalgan lies directly NW of Saintfield village (Taunaghwyn), and contains a hill of 432 feet on which is a raised rath or motte called The Moat (NISMR, ASCD 195). There are two other raths in the townland, but this is the most prominent. The old fort of Dundalk, inland from the modern town, was Dún Dealgan, where Dealga wa sa personal name, although it could also be a variant of the word for ‘thorn, pin’ or ‘brooch’. The short form of the name Ballelisgan given as an alternative 1605-45 seems to be simply an abbreviation.
