It was the tomb of the family of Arunte Volumnio ( Arnth Velimna Aules in Etruscan) , Volumnia of the gens , an ancient patrician family . The tomb belongs to the largest archaeological site of the Necropolis of Palazzone (VI -V century BC) , which has a large number of underground tombs and a museum that collects urns and other remains found after the excavation .
The tomb was used up to the first century , before being rediscovered February 5, 1840 , following refurbishment of the street Assisana , which connects Ponte San Giovanni in Perugia through the town of Piscille . To document the excavation , in a land in the vicinity of the Villa del Palazzone family owned Baglioni of Perugia was the archaeologist Giovanni Battista Vermiglioli . On this occasion , a building was constructed in defense of the underground and having features of small museum.
In the 70s , following the construction of an imposing viaduct motorway Perugia -Bettolle , the nineteenth-century building was consolidated by a reinforced concrete construction .
The tomb is through a corridor in steps ( dromos ) going down a few feet below the surface , at the end of it, is the gateway to underground . Beyond the door is a large vestibule , from which you can access four small side rooms and three central rooms , the largest and one of them contained the urns with the remains of the main breadwinners . The ceiling dell'ipogeo is in the shape of a sloping roof.
