This side of the airport is a military base hosting the Italian Spada 2000 Garrison. The Spada 2000 airdefence system covers the important Italian airfields and sensible areas.

Spada 2000 is an all-weather, day and night, highly automated, AD system with a quick reaction time and very few operators to man the system. A unit can operate independently or can be integrated with national airdefence centres.
Spada 2000 provides 2,000km² air coverage. Target detection and tracking range up to 60km and the missiles can intercept crossing and approaching targets to a range of 25km. Kill probability is high, even against highly agile crossing targets. The system can engage up to 4 targets simultaneously with Aspide missiles.

Spada 2000 is modularised and integrated into sheltered units, providing tactical and strategic mobility. The system consists of a detection centre and either 2 or 4 firing sections, each section equipped with 2 launchers. Each launcher has 6 ready-to-fire Aspide 2000 missiles.
