Organic waste treatment specialist, Agrivert, has opened a 40,000 tonne-a-year capacity in-vessel composting (IVC) facility at Ardley in Oxfordshire which has been built to treat green and food waste collected by local authorities in the county.
The £5 million facility, which opened Feb 2010, is the first of three organic waste treatment facilities the Chipping Norton-based company plans to develop to reprocess waste delivered under a 15-year deal it signed with Oxfordshire county council in March 2009.
The IVC tunnels have been constructed to be efficient and consume less energy. A "unique" gore membrane - similar to the material used to make breathable wet weather clothing - has been used to make the roofs of the tunnels. Agrivert said that this material helps to reduce odour by acting as a filter.Because the material is breathable it also means that less energy is required to power the fans to aerate the material inside the tunnels and ensure the composting process takes place properly.
The facility is expected to produce up to 20,000 tonnes of compost a year, to be used by farmers in the local area in order to keep the miles the compost has to travel to a minimum and reduce the carbon footprint of the facility.
