Originally a private house, remodelled in the mid-19th century, but of older origin. Once part of a large estate, it is at the centre of an area of former pleasure gardens given to the townspeople of Farnham and now owned by the Waverley Borough Council. As owners, Waverley have a duty to protect and maintain this Grade II listed building; however, they planned to demolish it until their legal duty was pointed-out to them. It has been boarded-up and seriously neglected since closure of the adjoining Redgrave Theatre, of which it formed the restaurant, many years ago. The gardens once included swimming baths (closed and redeveloped as housing circa 1980), a long-established bowling green (closed by Waverley Borough Council March 2007) formal gardens and lawns(now neglected) and tennis courts (planned for closure). The whole area is scheduled for commercial redevelopment.

  • "Although Brightwell House is not now to be demolished, it will be hemmed in by four and five storey buildings and the gardens replaced by smaller paved areas, which will seriously diminish its attraction." - That is a matter of opinion. I don't know what the new buildings will be like but there are less than before.
