Hydrogen sulfide salt springs (source temperature 50 degrees C) with emerald green color made the resort popular. Still more popular it became after the "Snow Country" movie was filmed here (Snow Country (雪国, Yukiguni) is a 1957 black-and-white drama Japanese film directed by Shirō Toyoda based on the novel Snow Country written by the Nobel Prize winning author Kawabata Yasunari between 1937 and 1941).
Also, the town is prowd of local sake based on excellent water and "koshihikari" rice. "Tasting course" is available.
