Raymond Hill (South Pasadena, California)

USA / California / South Pasadena / South Pasadena, California
 hill, place with historical importance

Originally known as Bacon Hill, it was renamed when Walter Raymond opened The Raymond Hotel here in 1886. It was the first and most premiere of Pasadena's hotels, and it was only open from December until April. The first hotel burned to the ground in 1895. The second, more fireproof hotel was opened in 1901. Surnames such as Harriman, Rockefeller, Armour, Swift, Carnegie, and Morgan -- the big East Coast movers and shakers of the time -- were a common sight in the hotel's registry. President Theodore Roosevelt and Charlie Chaplin were also hotel guests at one time. The hotel was foreclosed upon during the Great Depression and razed in 1934 for development.
