  • Gangoti and Dayal Lala - (Rakesh Sajwan) Gangoti........... unique place in my childhood memoirs. For me Gangoti is the synonymous of Dayal Lala. I still remember 2-3 small shops - one of Dayal Lala, the dark complexioned, short statured, leaned man in his eighties, working vigourously to support his family of 6-7 persons in the middle of forest. Sangramu ... the sturdy jet black man .. son of Dayal Lala - his 2-3 children playing on the lush green slopes - blissfully ignorant about the school tension. The other was Chandan Lala ....do'nt know much about him as we seldom visited his shop. Out favourite shop was that of Dayal Lala. It was customary for us to visit Gangoti leaving our cattles on the slopes of Bhangtur, deva or other parts of the forest ( I do not recollect the name correctly)to have tea/bun of Dayal Lala. Although he was a kind hearted gentleman but at times when we asked for some water, he became furious and refused. After intitial refusal, he offered a lota of water to our group of 3-4 to quench our thirst. One could understand his problem ............... he had to fetch the water from a samll stream down between oak trees. Gangoti being on the top of hill - table top like place, has no fresh water stream. The lonely kacha motor road passing through Gangoti, which was built at the time of Britishers, was the main road for the people of villages like Tamlg, Kunjeta, Gummain, etc. to reach differnt cities/ towns and back. I still remember the red coloured dak gadi which ply on this road and reached Gangoti around 3.30 in the afternoon. One can wonder why I am writing so much about Dayal Lala instead describing scenic beauty of Gangoti. I choose him the hero of this article.... because of his struggle in life .....that too in those harsh claimatic conditions with bare minimum things to live in..........no human populations in the radius of 4-5 km. At the end, for me, he Defied all odds of nature and stood winner.
