Preserves the foundations of the British military and fur trading post.

Fort St. Joseph was built after the American Revolution when British negotiators, none of whom had ever been to the Great Lakes region, handed over strategic Fort Mackinac to the United States.

As the War of 1812 approached, the British lost no time in organizing an expedition to re-take their former post. After the capture of Fort Mackinac, Fort St. Joseph was left all-but-deserted until the Treaty of Paris once again gave Mackinac Island back to the United States.
