Beach of Armacao do Pantano do Sul

Beach of Armação do Pântano do Sul or simply Armação is located in 25 kilometers from the city center of Florianópolis, and it is always flooded with tourist and surfers. There are one of the main artisanal fishing centers in Florianópolis located nearby.

The name Armação comes from the old economic activity, the production of whale oil for urban lighting. In addition to oil, other parts were used, such as meat, fat and even fins. As a result, overfishing led to extinction of whales in the area in middle of 19th century. Currently, whales are heavily preserved and observation tourism is a source of income for Santa Catarina island.
