This area about 200 to 250 years ago, was site to one of the first gas works in Scotland. But due to the towns rapid expansion following the second world war, it was destroyed along with about a third of the towns northern row of buildings forming the high street (to which the gas works lay behind, or to the north). These buildings were replaced by a highly controversial new housing scheme, appropriately named "the vennel" in 1967, consisting of 90 new homes. To which won the Scottish solstice awards in 1975. The Building were designed to reflect Linlithgow as being a modern town, or a town of the future.
