You are in the center of Washington Square, Newport's original town common. Unusually, the Newport town common is not dominated by a church at the head of the square as is often the case in colonial-era New England towns -- a direct reflection of Newport's unique history as a birthplace of religious freedom and tolerance. This information station describes the history of the buildings which surround Eisenhower Park in Washington Square.
