Avalanche zone

India / Jammu and Kashmir / Kargil /

Very obvious avalanche zone. The camp should not have been sited here. The avalanche should have been predicted and camp sited elsewhere. God bless the soldiers.

  • What exactly was the base defending against up here?
  • Dear James! Surprised at your ignorance! go read the wiki article on Siachin and also read the comments. This was a Battalion HQ with its forward companies on Posts established on peaks flanking the Siachin Glacier to thwart an Indian Operation by which the Siachin Glacier was stealthy occupied by the Indian Army in 1984.Ths camp is in place since then.Well if this Bn HQ was at an unsuitable place, then the Indian Army which is located on the Glacier is at a more Hazardous location. The Forces of nature never see who is in their path otherwise Space Shuttle Challenger and Columbia Disasters would never have occurred.Military service requires acceptance of risks and disasters for a larger national interest.Perhaps this is what Soldiers are made for.May God Bless the souls of the Martyrs.Aamen
  • From a tactical standpoint I would cede this ground and hold something for defensible. Should the enemy be foolish enough to invade this valley they would be trapped and be vulnerable to air strikes and artillery fire. Seeing how it is such a vulnerable location, it is not my ignorance that causes me to question why the Army was here, but rather my curiosity. The dead should be honored and remembered but leaders who make stupid decisions should always be held to account.
  • Kaiser Hameed...!!! I think James is correct, the camp was really just in front of Avalanche path. I should be sited / constructed before or after the avalanche zone. Another surprizing thing...!!! Pakistani Armies never tried seriously with full force to regain the Siachin such as Indian Army did in the battle of Kargil. Indians knew that they cannot approach the peaks of Kargil to fight with our Army but they never backed up. Casualties were in thousands but they did'nt care just to regain the Kargil. The truth is that at the time of Siachin loss, Pakistani Armies were busy / involved to fight a US war against Russain in Afghanistan. Strong Armies never let go their single inch of land, but it is surprising why Pakistan stop the war at Kargil in 1984...???? Another thing... Pakistan Army faced ashamed defeat of the history in Bangladesh where they was surrendering to Indian Generals with huge laughters... If you know the Armed history, refer Hitler, his Generals and many Japanese Generals who committed suside but never faced the enemy in position of defeat.
  • Don't worry..!!! Our "Shaheeds" are in Heaven. May Allah accept their mytyre.
  • That is our dilemma. Please accept the right advice. If we do not care of this type of problem, we will lose like this event. A true scientist can never give a wrong idea. But a mistake always open the door of right path. We should understand things scientifically and with research based methods.
  • Soldiers have died here, they need to be respected. But, the site was avalanche prone, and should have not been selected. With snow getting accumulated on the slopes, the camp should have been vacated and the avalanche artificially triggered.
