Remnants of the Canal built by John Egan around the Chats falls in the 1850s. The last few feet were never cut, partly due to Egan's death from Cholera in Quebec city. This end is the upstream terminus; the downstream terminus is cut by the hydro-electric dam. The canal was meant to replace the Upper Canada Forwarding Company's Horse Railway, which transhipped people and goods from Pontiac village to Union village.
