  • At one time, when I joined this school, it was called Government Indian Secondary School. Later it was re-named Azania Secondary School. I passed my Cambridge School certificate in December 1965 and went for further studies to India in May 1966. After graduating in India in 1970, I went to England. Does anyone remember me? I was also known as Jayu Thakrar. Jay Thakrar

  • Hi Saeed, My name is Branko Vidovic. I was in Azania school in 1963 and 1964 in IV A class. Mr. Ravi Sanhar Trehan ,english teacher was my class master. Everyone new me because I was the only student from Yugoslavia. If you or anyone else reads this message please contact me.
  • Azania will always be the best of the best never come down,
  • Like some of you I did my Senior Cambridge Exams in 1963 (1958-1963) Branko Vidovic mentioned Mr Ravishankar Trehan, yes I remember him. He inspired me to start a class magazine "Endeavour" when I was in class 7A. In those days in 1958 I did not have the modern day facilities of computers and printers so I had to write the magazine by hand. As an art student in the days of Somabhai and Lalabhai I was able to draw and illustrate the magazine with some flair. I came UK in 1964 and after 50 years in 2014 I returned to Dar es Salaam for the first time. I was able to visit the school and meet the headmaster and in conversation this magazine cropped up and to my surprise he got out an envelope and pulled out a copy of this magazine. A very emotional moment for me indeed. As I have very good hand writing Mr Sharma who was the biology teacher used to reserve my notebook for his own use as I progressed to the next class. I remember Miss Janki. Miss Fernandes, Miss O'Das, Miss Sharma who pronounced Q in a very funny way she used to teach geography so all the students, though they knew the spelling, they used to ask her to spell it. Who else do I remember Mr shastrabudh a maths teacher, Mr Dadubhai, Mr Dave, Miss Vargis Mr G T Jones the principal who was succeeded by Mr Simms how can I forget Bhodo.......the happiest days of my life.
  • The word I missed out was Equator we all enjoyed listening to her spell this word
  • Please visit my "Azania Secondary School" page on Facebook. I was at the school from 1962 to 1965. Came to UK in 1966 and returned to DSM in 1968 for a short visit. Love to visit DSM soon.
  • I was at the school from 1957 till 1963 when I completed my Senior Cambridge. One of my classmate was late Shrinder Bhandari- other being Amin Kanji. Both Amin and myself got obtained grade 1 in Geography thanks to our teacher, P J Woods. What a school it was. Having completed Architecture in England in 1972 I retu to my home in Dar es Salaam and live a mile and a half from the School. There are just a couple of old faces that I have recognized since my return. The school brings back lovely memories of all the teachers mentioned by Gunvant Patel- although the name does not ring a bell.
  • Hello and Good Morning from London Bhai Gunvant, Please see my comments to Branko Vidovic. I am still in touch with two teachers who are still around. Mr. Shantilal P. Jagatia (Geography) and Mr. Homi Sepai (Biology). Mr. Jagatia is in Milton Keynes U.K and Mr. Sepai is in Luckhnow, India. Mr Sahastrabudhe was our Book keeping teacher. He was here in the mid 1960s, but I understand that he passed away quite a while ago.Like your favourite word "Equator" we had an another word "Lumbering". Pupils would ask a certain teacher the meaning of the word lumbering in Gujarati. Hence his nickname became "Odhalbapa.
