The original Northfield School for Young Ladies was founded here in 1879 by Dwight L. Moody. The 'Mount Hermon' campus in Gill was founded for boys in 1881, and is where the school is presently located. Moody was born in a house here (the birthplace) and he and his wife are buried on 'roundtop', a hill on campus. Scenes from the movie "In Dreams" were filmed in the red maintenance barns on the east side of campus.

The former Northfield Mount Hermon School campus was sold to David Green, CEO and founder of Hobby Lobby, on behalf of the C.S. Lewis Foundation which planed to found the eponymous C.S. Lewis College on the campus, but the plans fell through and the site is currently being offered at no cost to a "Christian Institution" by the current owner prompting concerns by the local community that an extreme evangelical group like Liberty University might move in.
