hurricane, interesting place, flood protection
This barrier was constructed after the great flood of 1955 to prevent flooding on the 600+ acres of Stamford's south end. In case of a hurricane or a nor'easter, the Army Corps. of Engineers would respond and closed the barrier gate until the storm surge subsides. This engineering marvel was a topic on The Discovery Channel's show "Dirty Jobs" in 2006.
