Isobe Onsen is a flourishing resort on the Usui River. The output of thermal water there is said to have increased as a result of an enormous eruption of Mt.Asama during the Temmei era (1780's). The spa waters are thought to enhance beauty, as well as benign therapeutic in the treatment of gastric ailments. The area is also known as having given rise to the famous folk tale "Shita Kri Susume" (A sparrow whose tongue was cut).
