On 11 July 1944, A/1/23 Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division attacked across this draw (moving north to south) as part of the operation to capture Hill 192 (just off to the southwest). This hill needed to be cleared in order to begin the capture the city of St. Lo (to the west).

As 1st Platoon reached to bottom of the draw, the German infantry defending the area opened fire killing and wounding all but 13 members of the platoon. The 2nd and 3rd platoons moved around the western edge of the draw and eventually pushed off the defenders.

By the end of the day, A, B, and C Companies of the 23rd Infantry held a line the ran generally along the road that is called Rue du 11 Julliet 44/La Guilberderie/Vierge aux Moines. They were about 400 yards short of their objectives but their sister regiment, 38th Infantry, 2nd Division, had been able to clear Hill 192.
