Szczebrzeszyn

Poland / Lubelskie / Bilgoraj /

Szczebrzeszyn [ʂt͡ʂɛˈbʐɛʂɨn] (Yiddish: שעברעשין Shebreshin) is a city in southeastern Poland in Lublin Voivodeship, in Zamość County, about 20 km west of Zamość. It has 5,283 inhabitants (2007).

Szczebrzeszyn is widely known for having a hard to pronounce name for any but possibly Slavic native speakers. The poet Jan Brzechwa wrote a tongue-twister poem "Chrząszcz", starting with "W Szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie" (In [the town of] Szczebrzeszyn a beetle buzzes in the reed). Therefore, there is a statue of a beetle playing the violin in Szczebrzeszyn.
