Fort Macomb (New Orleans, Louisiana)

Originally named Fort Wood, this fort guards the Chef Menteur Pass approach to New Orleans.

Built beginning in 1822 on the site of an earlier fort.

As of 1851, it was intended to be armed with twenty-eight 24-pounder guns, six 12-pounder guns, nine flank howitzers, five 8" heavy seacoast howizters and one 10" heavy mortar for a total of 49 guns.

Already in ruins and not open to the public pre-Katrina.

  • It looks a lot like a ruined fort Pike (just down the road. I've always been intrigued by it. The second of three forts guarding New Orleans.
