The history of Schaesberg illustrates the decay of a historic building. Of the Renaissance castle and its farm from 1650, nothing is left but ruins. Round the second World War, the castle farm was still standing, though in a bad state of repair.

Owing to the numerous plunderings, the farmhouse was in danger of collapsing and the municipality of Heerlen had to pull down and raze it to the ground.

A reconstruction project has been initiated by the non-profit Stichting Slot Schaesberg. The castle, the farm, a forge and a vistors' centre will be reconstructed by crafsmen using traditional techniques.
