 commercial, office building

The front of Yates Centre was once part of a movie theatre originally known as The Atlas Theatre which opened in 1946 by the Famous Players Theatres chain. The Atlas was renamed as The Coronet in about 1965-66. For years, the Atlas/Coronet was one of Victoria's most popular theatres where many a moviegoer enjoyed the blockbuster movies that frequently played there. The Coronet closed its doors in 1989 and after sitting vacant for years it was eventually mostly demolished, but its façade was saved and incorporated into Yates Centre when it was built in 1995.
