Karaoke Bar located here in Miraflores' very active, festive late-night district nestled between Calzamoda shoe-store and Murguia Jewelers. The staircase leading up to Murguia's inset porch is to the right of Stragos' doorway, and you actually must descend a few steps from the sidewalk to enter Stragos' basement level location. Thus, Calzamoda is to the left, Murguia's is above (on the porch), and Murguia's staircase is on the right. The address of Stragos is Avenida Diagonal 346 (officially Avenida Mariscal Oscar R Benavides 346).
Understanding the allure and significance of karaoke involves understanding Lima, and for that matter Latin America and the Latin countries of Europe as well. Think Paris. "Bon Vivants", dancing, singing, parties, culinary delights, passion, emotion, sensitivity, love - all of these things characterize the classic Latin mindset. And Lima is NO EXCEPTION. All you stodgy, conservative North Americans had best be advised to be ready to "let your hair down" a little bit if you intend to visit Stragos' or the other locales in "Calle de las Pizzas" and the surrounding late-night district here in Lima.
The specialty here is karaoke, which the people of Lima positively adore. You can go on line and reserve a "box" for your party. You will see couples here, and you will see entire families here.
Now here's a warning to all you dudes. It is remarkably easy to meet a Peruvian charm during your vacation rambles. It is probably very unwise to give in to her desire to marry you until you have gone out with her for AT LEAST one year - in order to see if she is really mature, stable, and NOT looking for "help" with matters that are beyond your responsibility. She can expect you to pay the rent, provide food and other basics for you and her - but her family IS NOT your responsibility. Don't try to be a nice guy, or you will soon be broke. If she insists, let her go and you simply start hunting again . . . but wait 30 days. You will shudder in amazement when the phone rings after a week or so, and she asks you when the two of you are going out again. All of this assumes, of course, that after your vacation you come to the conclusion that North America is for the birds, and you are going to relocate here permanently (or at least semi-permanently). You MUST do this because long-distance relationships are extremely risky - and marrying the wrong girl will ruin your life. The good news is that you CAN find a wonderful woman in Peru. The nicer girls are actually in the provinces, but if you work at it, you can find one in Lima too.
So after you've landed your Peruvian prize, expect to celebrate family occasions at places like this one at Stragos. Oh yes, Peruvian girls are all close with their families. They simply do not move out until marriage, and in the event of divorce, frequently move straight back. Oh, and one more thing 30 PER CENT of those red hot girls in the disco HAVE KIDS !!!!
Birth control pills are expensive relative to Peruvian salaries. So you figure the girls must be very careful, right? WRONG !!! They are sensitive, emotional, passionate, loving women like the girls on the French Riviera, the girls in Ibiza, the girls in Rome, or any place Latin. They DO NOT practice abstinence (while simultaneously putting on a facade of being conservative). Once you know the girl a little while the facade comes off. Here in the late-night district you will also find girls who don't even bother much with the facade. But be careful. There are a relatively small number of girls here that are little better than common criminals, who will slip a sedative in your drink, and leave you stripped naked in the street, after you have passed out cold, and they have robbed you completely. It doesn't happen all that much, BUT IT HAPPENS.
One of your first questions should be "How many kids do you have?" because, otherwise, you may be spending a lot of extra bucks one day to support the "accident" she had with "José" back when she was 13. She wll never be offended by the question because so many single girls have children in Peru. That's the down side of passion.
In the long run, the good things outweigh the bad things if you take a little bit of precaution. One thing is for sure, the liberated, independent, oft-times misandric women of the United States, Canada, and much of Europe (these days) are NOT here in Lima. So far as that pathological element of sociological change is concerned you need not worry. The women are here are friendly, charming, and want a strong, loving husband to surrender themselves to. It is truly a remarkable throwback to a gentler, kinder time that few people can even remember. And older dudes are not left out. An older guy often represents stability and strength. Can a 43 year old guy land a 21 year old girl? CAN DO !!! Can a 52 year old guy land a 30 year old girl (without kids) and still start a family? CAN DO !!!
Yes, the good outweighs the bad, on balance. Enough said.
