quarry, landfill site / rubbish/garbage dump
The Dorking Greystone Lime Co. Ltd's Betchworth Works produced lime and cement products from c.1867-1969. After closure the pit was used as a landfill site and for filming scenes for popular TV series such as Doctor Who, Blakes' Seven, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Father Ted. Landfilling ceased in 2005 but the quarry's white cliffs remain a prominent local landmark visible from as far away as Horsham, more than ten miles distant.
